Etymology
Borrowed from fi sv Esbo (first attested as gmq-osw Espa in 1431). Perhaps originally given to a river (fi Espoonjoki) passing by the village that the city is then named after. Possibly from a compound of sv äspe aspen grove + sv å river. Lars Huldén has presented an alternative etymology for the initial element, deriving it from a diminutive of the given name sv Esbjörn.
