Etymology
From de gmh bīvuoz, gmh bībōz, from de goh pīpōz, goh bībōz, goh bīvōz, goh bīvūz, probably from goh bī- bōzan to push, to strike 1, from de gmw-pro *bautan, from de gem-pro *bautaną. The semantic development remains unclear. The v-form with folk-etymological adaptation to goh vuoz foot is attested since the 10th century, apparently at first in West Central German, where the development is indeed phonetically likeliest. Compare the same in osx bīvōt, dum bīvoet, whence nl bijvoet.
