Etymology
1920, when the former municipality was established, as a new name for the settlement previously called nb Orkedalsøren, also written nb Orkdalsøren and, in modernized form, nb Orkdalsøra; locally it was known as nb Øra. Coined from Ork-, the first element of nb Orkla and nb Orkdal, and -anger, from nb non angr inlet, bay, fjord. The river-name element is reconstructed as Old Norse non *Ork and has traditionally been connected with non orka to work, labour, perhaps in reference to the river's strong current, but this interpretation is uncertain.
Compare nb Orkland, formed from the same river-name element, and nb Hardanger, nb Stavanger and nb Varanger, older place names containing the same final element.
