Usage notes
The word muschi seems to mean at first glance the feminine plural of scn musca fly, so much so that this name ended up being mistakenly translated by the official Italian toponymy as "Cala Mosche", that is "cove of the flies", as well as many other places, including for example Isola delle Femmine.
In reality this toponym means "cove of mosses", which the semantic Italian outcome would have been "Cala [dei] Muschi", because muschi is the masculine plural of scn muscu.
Compare, for more, other mistranslated toponyms from Sicilian to Italian. The exemples are several:
it i it monti it Rossi in place of scn i scn munti scn Grossi (lit. "the big mounts");
it l'it isola it delle it Femmine in place of scn l'scn ìsula scn di scn Fimi (lit. "Euphemius's isle");
it costa it dell'it oro in place of scn costa scn d'scn aḍḍauru âḍḍauru (lit. "laurel's slope");
it la it Pillirina in place of scn a scn piḍḍigrina Piḍḍigrina (lit. "the (she-)pilgrim");
(it la it spiaggia) it dei it Marianelli in place of (scn a scn praja) scn dî scn Marianeḍḍi (lit. "the little Maries").
