Etymology
From lb gmh *schuon (attested in Ripuarian form as gmh schōn), north-western plural of gmh schuoch, from lb goh scuoh, from lb gem-pro *skōhaz.
The plural form gmh *schuon was reinterpreted as a singular, as also happened in modern Ripuarian gmw-cfr Schohn, li sjoon, and nl schoen (whereas fy - retains fy skoech, plural fy skuon). From this singular, then, new inflected and plural forms (gmh *schuones, *schuone, etc.) were construed, which underwent the regular Luxembourgish velarisation into lb schong-. Ultimately this stem was adopted as a new basic form. Compare the more original situation with two stems in lb Steen, plural lb Steng.
