Alternative forms

gmw-cfr Kastannich Moselle Franconian eastern, gmw-cfr Käst Kääst western
Etymology
From gmw-cfr dum karstanje, byform of dum kastanje, from northern gmw-cfr fro chastaigne castaigne, from gmw-cfr la castanea. The excrescent /r/ of the dum - is required to explain the Ripuarian /ʃ/. The form must have been altered to gmh *karsteien by metathesis and then gmh *karstei(e) by backformation. (A very similar development took place indepedently in dialectal fy kerstaai.) The /u/ might perhaps have been influenced by gmw-cfr Kuesch Kue(r)sch crust.
The Moselle Franconian forms come from the same Latin word, but via other paths: Eastern gmw-cfr Kastannich (like de Kastanie) is from the learned gmh kastānie, whereas western gmw-cfr Käst continues inherited gmh kesten kesten(e), from goh kestinna.
