Alternative forms
book of the Bible Judge of Israel en Josue obsolete
Etymology
From en hbo יְהוֹשֻׁעַ Yehoshúa', perhaps from he הוֹשֵׁעַ Hoshéa' with addition of he יהוה YHWH Yahweh, thus meaning "Yahweh is salvation". See he הוֹשִׁיעַ hoshía' to save. By cognate a direct equivalent to en Jesus via la Iēsūs and grc Ἰησοῦς from arc יֵשׁוּע Yēšū́ʿ, akin to he יֵשׁוּעַ Yeshúa', a variant of Yehoshúa'. The Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible and the Greek New Testament consistently render the two Hebrew names Yehoshúa' (whence Joshua) and Yeshúa' (whence en Jeshua) into Koine Greek as Iēsoûs (whence Jesus).
