Serbo-Croatian
Etymology
From sh Sr̀bija -nac Latn.
Pronunciation
Srbijánac
sh Sr bi ja nac
Noun
Srbijánac m-an Srbìjānka
an inhabitant or a resident of Serbia
sh Vojvodina an inhabitant or a resident of Central Serbia
Usage notes
sh
Because of past and present political circumstances, the use of the term by non-Serbs (mainly Croats and Bosnian Muslims), as well as by the Serbs from outside Serbia proper, may be considered offensive by Serbs, since it implies that the Serbs living in areas outside Serbia proper (mainly west of the Drina) and those living inside Serbia proper are not the same people. The terms sh Sȑbin and sh Sȑpkinja are the preferred ways to refer to ethnic Serbs.
