Usage notes
Führer und Reichskanzler was the official title of Adolf Hitler after the merger of the positions of de Reichspräsident president and de Reichskanzler chancellor in 1934. Hitler was subsequently known as der Führer in both official and common usage.
The word is now often replaced with other terms (such as de Anführer or de Leiter) when referring to a guide or leader and not used in a compound. Führer is still a perfectly acceptable word, however.
