Etymology 1
fi valita
From fi urj-fin-pro *-it'ak -icce-, from fi urj-pro *-ńće-, urj-pro *-nśe- (probably akin to the diminutive ending fi -inen -ise-). The original stem before preceding endings other than original *-et-, is *-icc- (e.g. *valic'en, *valiccepi, but urj-fin-pro *valit'ak). However, potential forms were replaced with ones in -nn- by semi-regular sound changes, intensified by degemination of -cc- to -c- and later assimilation to -n- (cf. urj-fin-pro *saictak → potential *sainni).
Suffix
verb itä itse
Forms instrumental verbs from nouns.
fi naula nail naulita to nail down
fi lääke medicine -itä lääkitä to medicate
Forms some verbs indicating acting in a capacity or a profession.
fi tulkki interpreter tulkita to interpret
Forms various other verbs from nouns or adjectives.
fi tarve need tarvita to need
fi villi wild -itä villitä to drive wild
Usage notes
Verbs with this suffix show the weak grade of consonant gradation in the stem, where applicable.
In many cases, derived verbs exist alongside verbs ending in fi -ia or fi -ta -(o)ta, e.g. fi himoita to lust beside fi himota from fi himo lust, archaic fi leikitä to play beside fi leikkiä from fi leikki play. It is unclear if these instances are derived directly from the base nouns or as pleonastic derivatives from the shorter verbs.
