Etymology
From de gmh hellebarte helle(n)barte, from older gmh helmbarte, from gmh helm stalk + gmh barte axe. The modern -d- is Central and Low German (compare de gml hēlenbārde) and/or influenced by de fr hallebarde, itself from the Middle High German. The stress pattern, too, may hint at French influence, though stress shifts in compound words also occur natively.
