Dutch
Etymology
First attested as hemmerte in 1144. Likely a compound of nl neder downriver and nl odt hamar stone, rock with collectivising suffix odt -itja-. The element nl neder was added later to distinguish the settlement from nl Ophemert, while the element nl zuid south, southern was added after the village was split in half through the extension of the nl Afgedamde Maas. Formerly a single village with nl Nederhemert-Noord. Compare de Hemmerde and de Hemmerden.
