Etymology
nb ine-pro *h₂ems-
nb h₂émsus
Variant of nb Åshild, retaining the traditional spelling ⟨aa⟩ for ⟨å⟩.
Ultimately from Old Norse non Áshildr, from Proto-Germanic gem-pro *Ansuhildiz, equivalent to non áss god; one of the Æsir + non hildr battle, literally “god-battle”.
The first element is from Proto-Germanic gem-pro *ansuz god, from Proto-Indo-European ine-pro *h₂émsus, itself from the root ine-pro *h₂ems- to engender, beget. The second element is from Proto-Germanic gem-pro *hildiz battle, fight; its deeper origin is uncertain, though derivation from Proto-Indo-European ine-pro *kelh₂- to hit, strike has been proposed.
