The village is first mentioned in 835 as Belasio, and also appears as Bellaxio, Belacius and Bislacus. The exact origin of the name remains it uncertain: some scholars believe that the toponym is a derivation from the it la - cognomen la Bellus, while others point to a formation la bi- + la lacus lake.
