The name is almost certainly related to fi Savilahti (after which a bailiwick and later the region was named) which is likely simply fi savi clay + fi lahti bay, gulf bay, with the fi -o representing a diminutive ending (from fi *-oi), possibly through a demonym fi savolainen. Other theories associate the name with Sami words for stream pool (smi-pro *sëvōn, se savu), with an Eastern Finnish given name fi Savo (compare the Veps given name vep Savoi), from ru Савва, ru Савва́тий, and a Western Finnish given name fi Sauvo (possibly akin to fi saukko). These given names could perhaps be more relevant as sources for the surname than for the place name at large, although the surname probably mostly derives from the place name.
