Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Pekel A, Pekell Ae and Pekel Ae in 1566. Named after a hydronym, derived in turn from a compound of the toponym Pekel (potentially connected to gml peke swamp reed, rush) and nl aa watercourse, river. The hydronym gave its name to a large peat extraction settlement which fragmented into several villages with the passage of time.
