Etymology
nb, based on nb la Mercurius Mercury, the Roman god; the planet Mercury. The Norwegian form is a shortened adaptation of the Latin name, with final -ius omitted. The Latin name itself is of uncertain origin, possibly connected with la merx merchandise, goods, or perhaps ultimately from nb ett - and subsequently influenced by Latin la merx.
The astronomical sense is named after the Roman deity. The association reflects Mercury's traditional swiftness; the planet moves around the Sun faster than any other planet, completing an orbit in about 88 Earth days.
Compare da Merkur, de Merkur, cs Merkur, sv Merkurius, fi Merkurius, fr Mercure and en Mercury.
