Serbo-Croatian Noun -ārnica f suffix appended to nouns or occasionally verbs to form a place where the specified object is sold, repaired, etc. or the specified activity occurs sh brȏd<t:ship> bròdārnica<t:shipyard> sh cȁrina<t:customs> carinárnica<t:customs house> sh kòtao<t:boiler> kòtlārnica<t:boiler room> sh kȍža<t:leather> kòžārnica<t:tannery> sh pek-<t:to bake> pèkārnica<t:bakery> sh rȉba<t:fish> ribárnica<t:fishmonger's shop> sh slàstica<t:sweet, pastry> slàstičārnica<t:sweetshop> Usage notes As shown in the examples, a stem ending in -c changes to -č, but -k remains as-is. Some words ending in -ārnica are alternatively or better derived from an agentive noun in -ār + -nica. This could be done, for example, with sh pèkārnica bakery, which could also be derived from sh pȅkār baker; sh slàstičārnica sweetshop, which could also be derived from sh slàstičār confectioner; and sh kòžārnica tannery, which is perhaps better derived from sh kȍžār tanner. Similar examples are sh kòckārnica gambling house, which may be better derived from sh kȍckār gambler than sh kȍcka die in games; sh lònčārnica potter's shop, from sh lònčār potter rather than sh lònac pot; and sh zlàtārnica goldsmith's shop, from sh zlàtār goldsmith rather than sh zlȃto gold. But this cannot be applied to all such words; for example, sh rȉbār means “fisherman” rather than “fishmonger”, and sh kòtlār means “boiler maker” rather than “boiler tender” or similar. And no such word sh *cȁrinār exists; the word for a customs officer is sh cȁrinīk. Declension sh noun
