Etymology
enm :bor non:-leikr
enm non -leikr, from enm gem-pro *-laikaz. enm -lok, also compare enm layk amusement, activity, enm -lechen -ify verb-forming suffix, and enm lok offering gift, offering. c 1180.
The expected pronunciation /-ˌlæi̯k/ is largely restricted to early, Northern, or Northwest Midland Middle English. In its place is found a form /-ˌlɛ̝ːk/ /-lɛk/, which Björkman posits reflects borrowing from a variety that underwent Old Norse#Dialects East Nordic monophongisation, but as Dance and Luick note, there are no other secure examples of borrowings showing the monophongisation of ei. They thus instead follow Björkman's alternative suggestion that it reflects vowel reduction of /-ˌlæi̯k/, though another possiblity is influence from the related verbal suffix enm -lechen.
Pronunciation
enm /-ˌlɛ̝ːk/ reduced /-lɛk/
enm /-ˌlæi̯k/ mostly <<early>>, <<N>>, or <<NWM>>

Usage notes
In taking adjectives from bases, -lek is functionally distinct from its doublet enm -lok, which forms nouns from other nouns (enm wedlok) and verbs (enm schendlok, possibly enm knoweleche).
