Etymology
From fi kauha va adjectival, given as a name to the river (thence to the town) after the nearby lake fi Kauhajärvi, in which the fi kauha scoop, ladle, dipper is probably a reference to the shape of the lake. The older and more straightforward name fi Kauhajoki (by simply replacing fi järvi lake with fi joki river) may have been avoided to prevent confusion with another nearby river of the same name.
