German
Etymology
de ine-pro
de :inh gmh:strumpf<ety:inh<gem-pro:*strumpaz>>
From de gmh strumpf, from de gem-pro *strumpaz stem, stalk. The semantic shift from "stalk, stump" to "leg clothing" came about as a result of a fashion development, where originally one-piece leg garments were separated into two parts, the trousers and the socks. The socks were interpreted as the "stump", i.e. the remainder of the leg garment. Related to de stramm and de strampeln.
