Fenster fenster

Alternative forms
lb Fënschter southern now dialectal
Etymology
From lb gmh vinster, lb gmw-cfr - variant of gmh venster, from lb goh fenstar, from lb la fenestra.
The line for the development gmh st > lb scht runs further south in this word than normally. It is possible that many dialects had developed denasalized forms lb *Fiischter ~ *Fäischter (such forms being attested as relicts on the German side of the border). When these were later displaced, the northern pronunciation /st/ may have penetrated deeper than otherwise expected. Feminine gender is widely found in gmw-cfr -.
