Dutch
Etymology
First attested as nederbele in 1477. Compound of nl neder lower, downstream and a second component of nl 1 etymology. Possibilities include a derivation from a term cognate to nl buil swelling or a derivation from gem-pro *bili- jutting, protruding. A third etymology interprets biel as "hunting ground".
