Etymology
From de goh *Zwist, attested in goh Zuistachgowe (8th century), probably from de gem-pro *twistaz as “a forking, branching-off” (compare enm twisten in this sense). The form in de Zw- is attested until at least the 15th century. After that, a pronunciation in /ʃ/ seems to have developed. The spelling de Swist is possibly a compromise form between older de Zwist and younger de Schwist. The contemporary pronunciation must be a de 1 as neither Standard German nor the Ripuarian dialect know de sw onsets. de Please specify the local dialect forms.
