English thumb|Darth Vader in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland. thumb|right|A Darth Vader (common noun, sense 2) on the Gatwick Express. Etymology "Darth" is a en dark death 1 (the derivation from Dark Lord of the Sith is a later development). "Vader" is traditionally explained as being from en nl vader father. However, Vader was not a literal father until The Empire Strikes Back (after the character was introduced), making this explanation more dubious than it may initially seem. This leaves a few possibilities. One is that it is still derived from “father,” but from a larger phrase “dark father,” where “dark” supports a figurative reading of “father” that alludes to absolute power rather than literal paternity. Were that so, this internal codename could even be an inspiration for the later idea of Darth Vader’s literal paternity over Luke. Another possibility is that it is a shortening of en invader, or that it is derived from the surname en Vader. Note that these above etymologies are not necessarily mutually exclusive, since names of characters in fiction are often compositions of various terms designed to evoke a certain sentiment. The Secret History of Star Wars Michael Kaminski 18 November 2008 Legacy Books Press 9780978465230 Appendix C: The Dark Father Pronunciation därthʹ vāʹdər UK, en /ˈdɑː(ɹ)θ ˈveɪ.də(ɹ)/ en LL-Q1860 (eng)-Naomi Persephone Amethyst (NaomiAmethyst)-Darth Vader.wav US Noun 1 en force A powerful individual or force, particularly one that is seen as malevolent, dominating and threatening. en 2004 Robert Whiting The Meaning of Ichiro: The New Wave from Japan and the Transformation of Our National Pastime 130 Irabu had hired Nomura, a man with whom he obviously had a great deal in common, and, who, as we have seen, was rapidly becoming the Darth Vader of Japanese baseball. en 2003 Marleen S.
