Etymology
From the equivalent de gmh ampfer, de goh ampfaro m, allied to the equivalent ang ompre, from de gmw-pro *amprō; an adjective used as a substantive. Compare nl amper sharp, bitter, unripe, gmq-osw amper, non apr sharp, chiefly of cold (for de gem-pro *ampraz); also nds ampern to prove bitter to the taste. de Sauerampfer (also corrupted to de Sauerramf Sauer-ramf) is a tautological compound like de Windhund. In case gem-pro *ampraz, from earlier Pre-Germanic und *ambras, represents the properly de ine-pro *amrós (see ine-pro *h₂eh₃mós), sa अम्ल amlá sour; wood-sorrel and la amārus bitter are primitively cognate with this word.
