Finnish
Etymology
Probably named after the lake (fi Köyliönjärvi), probably in turn after the river fi Köyliönjoki, which may have originally been called fi *Köylijoki (from which the ending fi -iö in the current name); the original part fi köyli- (< fi *keyli-) is likely of fi smi origin (akin to se geavli), meaning sharp bend and referring to the winding shape of the river. The alternative etymology connecting the place name with a North Germanic given name appears anachronistic.Mikko K.
