Finnish
Etymology
From fi kimi- nki, with the initial part likely of the same origin as the place name fi Kemi. Originally a name for some lakes, then for some villages, whence used for surnames. The -i- for an expected -e- in the first syllable has also been noted in attestations of the place name fi Kemi. According to Heikkilä (2014), this name derives from fi smi smi-pro *Këmëńžë little fairway, with the root of this name deriving from fi gem-pro *kwēmijaz easily accessible or passable.Mikko K.
