enm -esse -ess -ess

Etymology
nb de -is sharp-note-forming suffix. The further origin is uncertain; the German suffix is possibly a shortening of de Diesis diesis, from nb la diesis musical interval, from nb grc δίεσις passing through; interval, a derivative of grc διΐημι to send or pass through, itself formed from grc διά through, across + grc ἵημι to send, let go. The latter is from nb grk-pro *yīyēmi, ultimately from nb ine-pro *(H)yeh₁- to throw.
Compare the parallel borrowings fi -is and is -ís sharp-note-forming suffix.
