Etymology
Originally probably from the name of a nearby bay (fi Kempeleenlahti). From a Karelian dialectal (i.e. Karelian Finnish) word fi kempelä, fi kempele twisted, winding, fi kemmelä (in reference to the shape of the shoreline), possibly in some way derived from fi kampi (compare fi kampela) through later fronting.
