Etymology
An ancient term associated with the majority of the Ifa-divination systems of other Volta-Niger groups. Proposed to be derived from yo alv-yrd-pro *ò-gʷṹtã́, where it has a synonymous name yo Èjítọ́n, used currently in Yoruba only in the Ekiti dialect, but is regarded as this term in other languages. See igl Ògwútọ, ig Ògúte, nup Gúta, igb Ògútá, guw Ègúdá, fon Gùdá, ultimately from a common Volta-Niger root, perhaps yo alv-von-pro *-gúta, but the etymology is not known beyond there. Folk etymologies associate with the deity yo Ògún, which could suggest a link to igl ògwú.
