Etymology
de :inh gmh:hirs<ety:inh<goh:hiruz>> 1
From de gmh hirs, from older gmh hirz hirʐ(e), from de goh hiruz, from de gmw-pro *herut, from de gem-pro *herutaz. Cognate with nl hert, en hart.
When the goh -u- was lost by syncope (in inflected forms), the fricative /s̄/ came to stand after a consonant, which regularly it never did. This anomaly was then removed by replacing /s̄/ either with /s̠/ (spelt ⟨s⟩) or with the affricate /t͡s/ (cf. lb Hierz). In the former case, the cluster /rs̠/ was regularly shifted further to /rʃ/ (cf. de Kirsche etc.).
