Norwegian Bokmål
Etymology
From nb Hans datter male given name daughter, historically a patronymic meaning “daughter of Hans”. Unlike a hereditary surname, the traditional patronymic identified the bearer through her father's given name and ordinarily changed between generations. The form is now also retained as a rare hereditary surname.
