Luxembourgish
Etymology
The underlying meaning is roughly “wattle, sheaf or heap of straw etc.” (compare Luxemburger Wörterbuch and lemma Häupe in Rheinisches Wörterbuch). Probably with irregular lengthening from a lb gmw-pro *hupp-, whence also East Flemish nl hoppe tussock, fr houppe tuft; further perhaps related with gem-pro *haupaz heap. In some senses the word also blends with lb Käip, which is cognate with de Kiepe wicker basket.
