Etymology
fr frm Montreal, from frm Mont Royal Mount Royal, after the nearby mountain, fr Mont Royal, named by Jacques Cartier. It is uncertain how Royal became -real. A common explanation is that frm real is the Middle French form of fr royal Royal, but Cartier himself recorded frm mont Royal le mont Royal when he named it. It may have perhaps been from the Italian G.B. Rasmusio's 1556 map translating the name to Italian as it Monte Real.Archived copy http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/earth-sciences/geography/place-names/origins-geographical-names/9218 16 September 2017 https://web.archive.org/web/20160803212245/https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/earth-sciences/geography/place-names/origins-geographical-names/9218 3 August 2016
