Alteration of earlier lb Géind under influence of lb de Gegend, both from lb gmh gegende, from gmh gegen + gmh -de (equivalent to Luxembourgish lb géint -t); this is an alteration of older gmh gegenōte, from lb goh geginōti, probably after lb fro contree, whence also en country. Compare nl jegenode.
