Etymology
First attested as elsler in 1251. The oldest attestation suggests a compound derived from nl els alder, Alnus and nl laar intensively cultivated forest. It is possible, however, that the oldest attestation is a scribal error, and that the toponym thus derives from a compound of nl els and nl odt *tere tree. Compare nl Appeltern and the German hydronym de Elster.
