-ইয়া

Bengali Alternative forms bn -এ Rarh Etymology bn pra -𑀇𑀅 with extension bn -আ, from bn sa -इक​ -ইক. In all dialects, the high vowel /i/ of this suffix is subject to partial or (in some eastern ones) full retrograde metathesis across a non-initial consonant boundary (e.g. bn নগরিয়া nogoriẏa > bn নগইর‌্যা partial ~ bn নগইরা full). In western dialects, this is followed by umlaut with adjacent low vowels, converting the low vowel /ä/ of the suffix to mid-high /e/ (e.g. bn নগইর‌্যা > bn নগুরে).
