Norwegian Bokmål no Lærdalsfjorden thumb|Lærdalsfjorden viewed from County Road 243 near Sanden. Etymology nb ine-pro *per- Compound of nb Lærdal fjord municipality and district in Vestland fjord, with linking nb -s- interfix and definite singular nb -en definite singular suffix, literally “the Lærdal fjord”. The first element nb Lærdal is from nb gmq-mno Lærdall, attested in 1427, from nb non Læradalr, probably reduced from reconstructed non *Lærardalr. The latter consists of the genitive *Lærar of a lost river name non *Lærr and non dalr valley, dale, literally “valley of the Lærr”. The origin of the river name is uncertain. Magnus Olsen connected it with Old English ang læs pasture, interpreting non *Lærr approximately as “the river flowing through grass-rich land”; an earlier proposal connecting it with Old Norse non lær thigh was regarded by Rygh as unlikely. Old Norse non dalr is from nb gem-pro *dalą valley, dale, of uncertain deeper origin. The second element nb fjord is from nb non fjǫrðr fjord, firth, from nb gem-pro *ferþuz inlet, fjord, from nb ine-pro *pértus crossing, from the Proto-Indo-European root ine-pro *per- to go through, carry forth. Pronunciation nb /¹læːr.dɑːlsˌfjuːrən/ [ˈlæ̀ːɖɑ̌ːlsˌfjuːɳ̩] nb uːrən 4 nb Lær dals fjor den Proper noun nb proper noun Lærdalsfjorden; nb fjord county/Vestland c/Norway, a roughly nine-kilometre-long inner arm of nb Sognefjorden, extending southeastwards towards nb Lærdalsøyri. nb Lærdalselva munner ut i Lærdalsfjorden ved Lærdalsøyri.
