Etymology
From pal peo, from pal ira-pro *nagna- (compare sog 𐼻𐼲𐼻- naγn- bread, bal نگن nagan, ps naγan, Manichaean xpr 𐫗𐫃𐫗 ngn naγn Mani, kho nāṃji, and possibly the xcl - loanword xcl նկան); from pal iir-pro (compare sa नग्नहु ferment, a drug used for fermenting spirituous liquor). Further origin is unclear, but may stem from pal ira-pro *ni-kana- buried or laid under hot ashes, from pal ine-pro *h₁én *ní inside, down + pal ira-pro *kánHati to dig. Another theory derives the term from pal ine-pro *negʷ- bare, naked, in the sense "plain bread".
