Luxembourgish
Etymology
From lb Schwéier- + lb Papp. The first element may be either lb gmh swiger mother-in-law or gmh sweher father-in-law, from lb gem-pro *swegrō and gem-pro *swehuraz respectively. While German generalised the feminine in de Schwiegervater (displacing obsolete de Schwähervater), the Luxembourgish development may have been the other way round, because only gmh sweher regularly yields lb Schwéier. From gmh swiger one should expect either lb *Schwiger or lb *Schweier. However, it is also possible that these were altered after lb Schwéiesch sister-in-law, which derives from yet another related word, namely gem-pro *swēgraz brother-in-law.
