Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Leeg Halen in 1781. Compound of nl laag low, low-lying and a toponym of nl unknown origin. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a term cognate to dialectal nl hal barren, dry and nds-nl hal frozen ground or, alternatively, a derivation from a term cognate to ang halh corner, hiding place. The element nl laag was added to distinguish the settlement from nl Hooghalen. Compare nl Halen.
