English
Etymology
Likely from a false folk etymology deriving en Halifax from Old English ang hāliġ ang feax ("holy hair"), although it probably actually came from ang healh halh ġefeaxe 1 ("grassy corner"). To this root en halig- was added the en -onian suffix, probably with analogy to other British demonyms following a similar pattern such as en Oxonian, en Cantabrigian, en Mancunian, en Glaswegian, etc. The original demonym was en Halifaxian from the Nova Scotian city's founding in 1749 until the early 19th century (around the third generation of residents), when en Haligonian became preferred. The reason for the change may be in part due to a negative association with the original demonym.Falk Michael The origin of the demonym 'Haligonian' signifying an inhabitant of Halifax, Nova Scotia Onomastica Canadiana Canadian Society for the Study of Names Halifax, Nova Scotia 1-13 92 1 Jun 1, 2010, via the Libraries of the University of Western Ontario.
