English
Etymology
Initially, the eleven states of the Malay Peninsula were organised as the Malayan Union, but this was opposed by Malay nationalists. To address the Malays' concerns, the Federation of Malaya restored the traditional authority of the Malay monarchs and added some restrictions on citizenship.
