Dutch
Etymology
Potentially attested as alke and aske in 889, attested with certainty as aske in 1288. Potentially derived from a variant of nl es ash, Fraxinus excelsior. A derivation from the old hydronym dum Ascha (compare nl Asse) is also possible. Whether the oldest attestations refer to Asch or an otherwise unknown settlement near nl Heemskerk is unclear.
