Dutch
Etymology
First attested as epse in 1195. Etymology nl 1. Potentially derived from gem-pro *apa- river, current, more specifically from the hydronym gem-pro *apa-isa. A derivation from the metathised form of nl dum esp aspen, Populus tremula is not likely based on the oldest attestations.
