German
Etymology
From de gmh streich, from de goh *streih, from de gmw-pro *straik stroke. Compare nl streek, en stroke. In Middle High German the form gmh strīch also occurs, which is either an adaptation to, or a new derivation from, the underlying verb de streichen. In Modern Standard German both forms would have merged, but most dialects continue West Germanic ai.
