Etymology
First attested as in uilla podarwic around 850. Likely a compound derived from nl odt podero calf, foal and nl ooi land next to water. Proposed derivations of the first element from nl odt Bodhari a personal name or a term signifying "mud" or "sediment" are less likely. The older element nl wijk settlement, village was eventually replaced by nl ooi. Compare nl Peursum, nl Poeijers, nl Sterksel, nl Vaarle, nl Vaarsel, nl Varsen, nl Varssel, nl Varsselder, nl Varsseveld, nl Ten Vorsel and nl Bolsele.
