Etymology
Associated with fi mela; created as a Fennicized surname in the late 19th century. Possibly first adopted by Aukusti Juhana Mela. Some of those who later adopted the surname had surnames beginning with Mela- (e.g. sv Melander, sv Melin). It is not completely impossible that some of these derive from Finnish place names containing fi mela.
