From de gmh nāchbūr, gmh nāchbūre, gmh nāchgebūr, gmh nāchgebūre, from de goh nāhgibūr, goh nāhgibūro, from de gmw-pro *nāhwagabūrō, from de gem-pro *nēhwagabūrô neighbour. Equivalent to de nah, de nach near, next, after + de Bauer dweller, farmer.
The first component underwent pre-cluster shortening, the second was monophthongized from Early Modern German de Baur (and then possibly associated with the unrelated suffix de -bar).
